What a gutter guard does.

A gutter guard sits over or inside your gutter. Rain gets through, and leaves, pine needles, shingle grit and twigs stay out. You’ll also hear them called gutter covers, leaf guards, leaf filters and gutter screens. They all do the same job in different ways.

Installer kneeling on a shingle roof fitting a gutter guard into the gutter

Why people add them.

A clogged gutter overflows, and the water ends up where you don’t want it.

  • Water reaches the downspouts instead of spilling over the edge
  • Less water pooling at the foundation and seeping into the basement
  • Less rot in the fascia and soffit behind the gutter
  • Fewer trips up the ladder to scoop out leaves
  • No packed debris for birds and pests to nest in

We offer four kinds of gutter guards.

Each design handles debris differently. Here’s how they work and which houses they suit.

Micro-mesh gutter guard with pine needles resting on top

Micro-mesh gutter filters

A fine mesh stretched over a frame. Water passes through the mesh, and it stops small debris that gets through other guards. We install LeafBlaster Pro.

Stops
Leaves, pine needles and shingle grit
Good fit
Homes under pines or heavy tree cover
Perforated aluminum gutter cover over a white gutter

Perforated gutter covers

A solid sheet punched with evenly spaced holes. Water drops through the holes, and leaves and twigs stay on top.

Stops
Leaves, twigs and larger debris
Good fit
Leafy yards, at a moderate price
Leaf Sentry hood-style cover over a white gutter

Helmet-style gutter covers

A solid hood over the gutter, also called a reverse-curve guard. Surface tension carries water around the curved edge and into the gutter, and debris slides off the front. We install Leaf Sentry.

Stops
Leaves and debris that wash off the hood
Good fit
Heavy rain, when it’s installed at the right angle
Black expanded-metal gutter screen over a gutter

Powder-coated screens

A low-profile screen with a corrosion-resistant powder coat. It keeps leaves out without slowing the water down.

Stops
Leaves and larger debris
Good fit
A budget option where most of the debris is leaves

How we pick the right guard for your house.

No single guard works best on every house, so we don’t sell just one. A steep roof sends water at the gutter fast, so it needs a guard that can take that volume without overflowing. A low-slope or complicated roofline needs one that won’t hold standing water or debris.

What we look at

  • Roof pitch
  • Roofing material
  • The trees around the house and what they drop
  • How much rain each section of roof sends to the gutter
  • The condition of your gutters
  • Where the downspouts are

Before the guards go on

  1. Check the gutters for leaks, rust and damage
  2. Clean them out completely
  3. Secure loose sections
  4. Fix minor problems

If your gutters are too worn to hold a guard, we’ll tell you, and we can replace them with seamless gutters first.

What they keep out

  • Oak leaves
  • Pine needles
  • Acorns and caps
  • Seed pods and tassels
  • Shingle grit
  • Twigs and sticks
  • Pine cones
  • Bird nesting material

Gutter guard brands we install.

We carry several brands instead of one franchised product, so the guard fits the house. At your estimate we’ll show you samples and walk you through the differences.

Gutter guard FAQs

What is a gutter guard?

A cover, filter or screen that sits over or inside a gutter. It lets rain in and keeps leaves, pine needles, shingle grit and twigs out. Gutter covers, leaf guards, leaf filters and gutter screens are all names for the same thing.

Which type of gutter guard is best?

It depends on your roof and your trees. Micro-mesh stops the finest debris, so it suits homes under pines. Perforated covers and screens handle leaves well for less money. Helmet-style covers work in heavy rain when they’re installed at the right angle. We recommend one after we look at your roof pitch, roofing material, trees and gutters.

Can gutter guards go on my existing gutters?

In most cases, yes. First we check the gutters for leaks, rust and damage, clean them out, secure loose sections and fix minor problems. If they’re too worn, we’ll recommend replacing them with seamless gutters before the guards go on.

Do gutter guards mean I never have to clean my gutters?

Guards cut down on cleaning, but no guard makes a gutter maintenance-free. If you’d rather not have guards, we also offer gutter cleaning contracts.

Which gutter guard brands do you install?

Klear Micromesh Filter, Klear PERFormance, Gutterglove Pro, MicroMesh Pro, Leaf Blaster Pro, Bulldog Gutter Guards, Leaf Relief by Ply Gem, Leaf Sentry and K-Screen.

Can I see the guards before I choose one?

Yes. We bring samples to your free estimate and show you how each one works.

How much do gutter guards cost?

It depends on the type of guard and how many feet of gutter you have. We measure at your free estimate and give you a written proposal with a firm price.

Can you install guards with new gutters?

Yes. Many customers add guards when we install new seamless gutters, and we can do both in the same visit.

Where do you install gutter guards?

Across Maryland, Northern Virginia, the Richmond area, Washington, DC, Delaware and North Carolina. See the areas above, or book a free estimate and we’ll come to you.

Can I get an estimate from photos?

Yes. GutterSnap is our photo estimate technology: you take photos of your home and we use them to put together your estimate. If you’d like to use GutterSnap, contact us first so we can get a few details from you.
